Saturday morning a small group of us went into Galway City to spend the day. We ate at a small restaurant called "The Irish Cafe" where I ate the biggest sandwich I have had in my life, which was delicious!
After we ate, we explored the small shops and mall. I thought it was interesting that some of the clothing stores were significantly cheaper than back in the U.S. I bought a very cute, warm scarf at Penney's for two euros. I definitely would check out this store when visiting the city of Galway. I am glad the group went early in the morning because all the shops/mall and grocery stores shut down at 7pm. Pubs are the only places open after 7pm. Me and a few friends went into The Kings Head pub and watched a rugby tournament. Scotland was playing France and the pub was packed. Rugby is a sport I had scarcely heard of nor seen in action before and found the sport interesting as well as dangerous. There was not any protective gear and the game was rather aggressive. After the game we went to another pub called The Quay's which is seated in the heart of Galway City. Quay's pub has so much history. It use to be a Church and still had the stain glass windows and beautiful architecture throughout the establishment. Besides The great food, beautiful building and historical pubs I was ecstatic about the multiple musicians jamming on every street corner. Once in awhile I would stop and listen and throw in a euro to show support.
On Monday morning, Jane Marie brought two young gals to our Gaelic class to teach us basic Irish dancing steps. i enjoyed this although it was much more difficult than I thought it would be. I really hope we will have more Irish dancing classes in the near future. Monday night I walked the twenty five minute into Spiddle to get some grocery's at the local gas station/grocery store called Texaco. My cabin has decided that it would be cheaper to chip in on the groceries, but we found that we go through food very quickly and are constantly making the the twenty five minute walk to Spiddle to restock on bread and milk.
I will be spending this weekend in Belgium exploring the towns of Brussels and Amsterdam. We will be visiting the Anne Frank house and possible some other tourist attractions like The Noble Palace and Red Lights District. This will be my first time staying at hostels and I look forward to this adventure.
