I enjoyed the bike ride in the Aran Islands from the previous weekend so much that a small group of us got together and decided we wanted to rent bikes in Galway and explore the beauty in Ireland. Once we reached Galway we decided that we wanted to be more spontaneous and wanted to travel outside the city of Galway. We got bus tickets to a town called Doolin which is a small town about the size of Spiddle. We picked Doolin because it was walking/biking distance from the Cliffs of Moher. We stayed at a self serving cottage connected to this really nice ladies house. The cottage was similar to the cottages that we are staying at in Spiddle except little nicer and they had hot water which was lovely! Thursday night we went on a walk and got showered with hail several times. We walked to the "Cliffs of less" which was this small cliff on the path to the cliffs of Moher. The waves were so big that we got soaked from top to bottom. We ate at one of the local pubs and then went to bed early so we were able to get up early to hike the Cliffs of Moher. On Friday morning we ate breakfast at the same local pub and then started our long hike on the shore line up to the Cliffs of Moher. The hike was beautiful and challenging because the "path" was sketchy. I wondered if it was safe to be hiking at certain points on the hike. There were parts of the hike that were slippery and there were parts in the hike where we were literally climbing. I was not expecting the hike to be that tough, but it was totally worth it! When we finally reached the top of the cliffs our shoes were very muddy and our legs were sore. The cliffs were a lot higher than the Aran Islands and I was scared to death to get too close to the edge. There were warning signs about the wind and how it was important to be cautious because the wind gusts can be so strong that they will push you off the cliffs. Scary! Don't worry,I survived! The top view of the cliffs were beautiful and I felt like I was in another world.
At the end of the day we had hiked a total of fourteen miles! It was quite an accomplishment in my book and I'll never forget the memories and sights from that day! On Saturday we woke up sore, so we decided to take it easy. There was a big music festival going on in town with local musicians playing traditional Irish music in all of the pubs. Saturday night we went out to enjoy the music! They even played our favorite song "Galway girl", just for us! It was an absolute blast! We listened to some great music and met some really awesome people(including my future husband, Jim) :) The next day we had a delightful little Irish breakfast and then got back on the bus to Galway city. Needless to say we didn't do any biking that weekend.oops! It was a great spontaneous trip with awesome friends!
